Bidspirit auction | AKAN WOODEN STOOL

AKAN WOODEN STOOL - Ca. late 19th - early 20th century AD. This finely carved Akan stool follows the classic form: a curved seat with upturned ends, supported by cylindrical uprights and a central openwork panel on a rectangular base. Metal tacks decorate the surface. Among the Akan, stools are not merely functional but carry deep spiritual and political meaning. Personal stools embody the owner’s identity, while the ritual “blackening” of a stool transforms it into an ancestral shrine.
