BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD CROSS WITH CENTRAL RED GARNET CABOCHON AND FOUR QUADRUPEDS - Ca. AD 600 - 800. A gold pendant in the form of a cross with rounded arms, each composed of a repoussé medallion enclosing a beaded border and a quadruped with curled tail and head turned back. A garnet cabochon is set in a raised circular bezel at the centre, surrounded by four applied gold spheres and a border of fine granulation. The suspension loop is positioned above, and the reverse is plain. Size: 45mm x 35mm; Weight: 5.2g Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s.
