LARGE HELLENISTIC PLATE WITH HANDLES - Ca. 300 BC. A fine dish moulded from cream-coloured terracotta featuring a short foot and a broad, deep body with a slightly everted rim. Two horizontal handles are attached to the opposite sides of the body. The Hellenistic period, which runs from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC to the battle of Actium in 31 BC, was an era in which Greek-speaking peoples controlled much of the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia as far as present-day Afghanistan.Size: L:130mm / W:365mm ; 3.3kgProvenance: Property of a central London Gallery; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andre de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in and old European collection.
