ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF SEVERAN NOBLEMAN - Ca. AD 193 - 235. A Roman marble portrait head of a man, carved with keen attention to physiognomic detail, features short, tousled hair, incised brows, and a modest beard and moustache. The eyes are large and drilled, conveying a sombre, introspective gaze characteristic of late Severan or early soldier-emperor portraiture. The slightly parted lips and strong facial planes evoke a sense of presence and individuality. Possibly from a provincial workshop, the head bears minor losses to the nose and chin, along with surface encrustations and wear. It stands as a finely executed example of private or official portraiture.
