SELJUK INLAID BRASS LION WEIGHT FOR CARPET WITH INSCRIPTIONS - Ca. 12th - 14th century AD. A brass lion-shaped carpet weight, modelled recumbent with the forepaws withdrawn and the head lifted. The face shows a rounded muzzle, arched brow ridges and drilled ears, and the neck is encircled by a narrow collar. The flanks are decorated with rectangular epigraphic panels between cusped cartouches enclosing foliate motifs and birds; rows of triangles run along the back, and the tail is formed as a projecting pierced lug.Size: 100mm x 155mm; Weight: 640gProvenance: Property from a Private London Collection, acquired prior to 1979.This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
