QAJAR LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN CASE (QALAMDAN) AND CALLIGRAPHER'S IMPLEMENTS - Ca. 19th - 20th century AD. An oblong pen case in lacquered papier-mâché with a pull-out tray fitted with a fixed metal inkwell, the sides and domed cover painted on a dark ground with nightingales among rose sprays (gul-o-bulbul) within narrow borders, the underside with foliate scrolls. Accompanying the qalamdan are metal scissors for cutting letters, a small water spoon for diluting ink, and a horn pen rest.Size: 40mm x 225mm; Weight: 160gProvenance: Private UK Collection.
