MOTHER OF PEARL INLAID WRITING BOX - KHATAMKARI MICRO-MOSAIC BOX - Ca. 19th - 20th century AD. A wooden writing box veneered with khatamkari micro-mosaic and inlaid with mother of pearl. The box of rectangular form with a flat top, a lockable front panel and a side bail handle on turned mounts. The exterior is organised with a cushion-shaped frame enclosing a central roundel of starred tessellation, the ground filled with fine scrolling arabesques and small rosettes, all within multiple borders of repeating star medallions and geometric bands.
