CHINESE MOTHER OF PEARL CARVED BOX - Qing Dynasty, Ca. 18th-20th century AD. A beautiful mother-of-pearl box of rectangular form, the cover composed of meticulously carved mother-of-pearl panels depicting peony blossoms and scrolling foliage surrounding a central roundel, all enclosed within shaped corner cartouches of floral motifs. The sides are similarly decorated in relief with stylised foliate designs. The subtle iridescence of the shell, together with the precision of the carving, reflects the refined craftsmanship characteristic of southern Chinese workshops during the late Qing period.
