FRAGMENT OF GREEK MARBLE STATUE - Ca. 500 - 400 BC. A fragment of Greek marble statue finely carved in creamy-white marble with subtle veining, this fragment preserves the upper portion of a draped female figure, comprising part of the neck and shoulders, along with the upper chest, enveloped in deeply folded himation or peplos. The garment is carved with careful attention to the fluid movement of fabric, a hallmark of late Classical sculpture, descending in a rhythmic sequence of linear folds that gently contour the form beneath. On the reverse and sides are traces of the original surface left rough for insertion or attachment, as well as an iron dowel still embedded in one area, suggesting the statue was originally fixed into a larger composition or base.
