BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD ENAMELLED MEDALLION WITH ST TRYPHON - Ca. AD 1000 - 1100 A gold medallion with a cloisonn? enamel nimbate bust of St Tryphon, holding a cross in his right hand and raising his left in blessing. The bust is set within a circular 22.5kt gold field, his name in Greek letters arranged to either side. A fine beaded border runs around the edge, surmounted by a suspension loop above a small rosette. The reverse bears a raised 23kt gold cross with rounded terminals on a hatched ground within a recessed circular panel. Size: 60mm x 50mm; Weight: 29.6g. Provenance: Private UK collection; European and UK art markets; with Claus-Eberhard Schultze, Germany, 1980s-1990s; Ex-collection of Hans-Ulrich Rutschmann, Switzerland, 1960s-1970s.
