ROMAN HIGH KARAT GOLD RING WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING MINERVA HOLDING VICTORY - Ca. AD 50 - 200 A carnelian intaglio engraved with Minerva standing to the right, helmeted and draped, with a shield at her side, holding a small winged Victory on her outstretched left hand. The intaglio is set in a plain recessed bezel of a possibly later gold finger ring that expands into smooth tapering shoulders and a hoop of D-section. Size: D:16.1mm / US: 5 1/2 / UK: K 1/2; Weight: 6.5g. Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was documented and authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery. A significant number of objects from this collection were published in a professional catalogue, a copy of which is available upon request.
