EARLY BYZANTINE HIGH KARAT GOLD OPENWORK DROP-SHAPED PENDANT WITH CENTRAL AMETHYST GEM - Ca. AD 600 A stunning gold drop-shaped pendant enclosing a central amethyst bead suspended from a fine wire loop. Around the bead runs an openwork field of scrolling tendrils within a punched and beaded inner border. The outer edge is set at intervals with applied hollow pellets. An integral suspension loop rises at the apex.Size: 55mm x 40mm; Weight: 10.7g.Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was documented and authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery.
