ROMAN CARNELIAN INTAGLIO WITH MARS BY A COLUMN IN HIGH KARAT GOLD RING - Ca. AD 200 - 300 A carnelian oval intaglio engraved with the god Mars leaning his right elbow against a column, his left arm extended, a long spear set upright behind him. The intaglio is set in the bezel of a possibly later 23kt gold ring with a flat-section hoop and expanded shoulders decorated with low-relief vegetal ornaments. Size: D:18.34mm / US: 8 1/4 / UK: Q; Weight: 12.2g. Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of an early 2000s UK ancient art collection; formerly in the collection of G.M., prior to 1996.
