ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF CARACALLA - Ca. AD 215 - 217 A marble head of the emperor Caracalla with short, tightly curled hair arranged in dense, overlapping locks over the crown and framing the ears, the beard and moustache rendered in similar small curls along the jaw and chin. The broad face is modelled with a low, furrowed brow, deep-set eyes beneath heavy lids, a straight nose, prominent cheekbones and a firm, slightly protruding lower lip above a square chin. Mounted on a marble base. Size: 540mm x 220mm; Weight: 31kg. Provenance: Private UK collection; previously in a 1990s. European collection.
