ROMAN MARBLE HEAD OF ANTONINUS PIUS - Ca. AD 138 - 161 A marble portrait head of Antoninus Pius, with a full crown of deeply drilled curls arranged in thick locks over the forehead and temples. Heavy brows sit above almond-shaped eyes, the lids cut with a sharp upper ridge and a softly rounded lower lid. The nose is long and straight, set above a narrow mouth framed by a trimmed moustache, with a short, textured beard in close, clustered tufts along the jaw and chin. With a later re-carving and polishing. Mounted. Size: 320mm x 210mm; Weight: g. Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Belgium; formerly in a German private collection before 2000.
