BYZANTINE MARBLE TABLE TOP WITH CHI-RHO AND AGNUS DEI - Ca. AD 600 - 800 A circular marble table top carved as a thick disc with a slightly raised rim and a face decorated with concentric registers. At the centre is a roundel enclosing a Chi-Rho monogram between Alpha and Omega. This is surrounded by a plain circular field and a ring of ten shallow, lobed recesses divided by narrow ribs. The outer zone is carved with a sequence of roundels containing rosettes and cross motifs, and a frieze of lambs in low relief arranged in procession and flanking a staurogram. Around the rim runs a continuous border of alternating crosses and circular motifs.
