SUMERIAN STONE FIGURE OF A LAMASSU - Ca. 2200 - 1800 BCA stone figure of a lamassu carved as a recumbent composite creature with a human head emerging from a leonine forepart and a compact, block-like body. The head is topped by a flat cap-like headdress, the face with prominent arched brows, large drilled eyes and a straight nose above a smiling mouth. A long rectangular beard and heavy mane frame the face and chest, rendered with vertical grooves terminating in tight curls arranged in horizontal tiers. The legs are folded beneath the body, the rear smoothly rounded with a simple tail running down the centre.Size: 130mm x 180mm; Weight: 2.47kg.Provenance: Private London collection; UK collection, 2010s; German art market, 2000s; Alex G.
