RARE ETRUSCAN HYDRIA DEPICTING ACHILLES AND PENTHESILEIA - Ca. 400 - 300 BC A red-figure terracotta hydria with a flaring mouth and a thickened rim decorated with an ovolo band, above a tall neck with a frieze of tongues. Two horizontal handles project from the shoulder, and a vertical handle rises at the rear. The shoulder is ornamented with a frieze of fan-shaped palmettes. The main panel shows Achilles confronting the mounted Penthesilea, with a large round shield between the figures and spears raised. The reverse is decorated with a large palmette with scrolling tendrils, and a band of running waves encircles the lower body above the moulded foot. Size: mm x mm; Weight: g.
