APULIAN RED-FIGURE BAIL AMPHORA WITH OFFERING SCENE BY MENZIES GROUP - Ca. 340 - 320 BC A red-figure terracotta bail amphora with a tall cylindrical neck with vertical tongues beneath a broad overhanging rim, and an ovoid body tapering to a high foot, surmounted by an arched bail handle attached at the rim. The front panel shows a standing nude male youth to the left, with a mantle over his left arm, extending an offering towards a seated draped female figure, with small scrolling tendrils between them, flanked by vegetal motifs and taeniae. The reverse shows two himation-clad ephebi standing and facing each other, the figured panels separated on either side by spiralling tendrils. A wave band encircles the shoulder, and a further wave band runs below the reverse panel only. Size: 680mm x 190mm; Weight: 3.99kg. Private London collection; previously acquired on the Belgian art market; originally in the collection of L Evrard, Liege 1980?s.
