APULIAN RED-FIGURE BELL KRATER WITH DIONYSIAC SCENE LINKED TO SAKKOS PAINTER - Ca. 350 BCA red-figure bell krater with a broad everted rim and deep body set on a moulded pedestal foot, with a pair of horizontal loop handles set high on the shoulder. The exterior rim is decorated with a laurel wreath, the lower body with a continuous wave band. Side A shows Dionysus reclining on a couch, wearing an ivy wreath, extending a phiale in his right hand and holding a thyrsus in his left, facing a maenad seated to the left playing the double flute, with a kalathos at her feet, the figures framed by large palmettes and scrolling tendrils. Side B is painted with two draped youths facing one another, each wrapped in a himation and standing between stylised plant tendrils and palmettes.Size: 325mm x 295mm; Weight: 2.6kg.Private London collection; previously acquired on the Belgian art market; originally in the collection of P Marchal, Brussels, 1990?s.This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.For similar see: A.
