BYZANTINE SGRAFFITO WARE CUP WITH CENTRAL STAR - EX ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM - Ca. AD 1300 - 1400 A sgraffito ware cup with a hemispherical bowl set on a short ring foot. The interior is coated in a pale slip and decorated in sgraffito with a central medallion enclosing a cross with scalloped and hatched motifs within a double concentric circle. The medallion lies within an incised four-pointed figure overpainted in green, the points extending towards the rim. A band of green glaze runs around the lip on the exterior. Size: 75mm x 160mm; Weight: 312g. Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; Previously in the collection of James Alfred Brew (1923?2008), collected in Cyprus, predominantly during the 1960s.
