LARGE ROMAN SILVER-GILT PHALERA WITH GORGONEION - Ca. AD 100 - 225. A large circular silver-gilt phalera with a central gorgoneion. The face is modelled with wide almond eyes, a straight nose and a closed mouth, framed by a coiffure of wavy locks threaded with two serpents coiling across the crown and tied beneath the chin. The surrounding field is bordered by a dotted band and pierced with four attachment holes spaced around the perimeter. Size: 100mm x 100mm; Weight: 65g Provenance: From an old British collection formed in the 1990s; previously acquired in Austria.
