MANGBETU CEREMONIAL DAGGER - Ca. 19th - 20th century AD. A Mangbetu ceremonial dagger of elegant leaf-shaped form, the broad metal blade with raised medial ridge. The sculptural wooden hilt, carved with bulbous and tapering elements, is polished to a rich, glossy surface. Such blades, while recalling the form of throwing knives, were primarily ceremonial or prestige objects among the Mangbetu.
