Tzelach on Tractate Beitzah, First Edition, Prague 1799 – Copy of the Attendant of R. Akiva Eiger: The Gaon Rabbi Baruch Rosenfeld, ABD Gollub. - Sefer Tzion Lenefesh Chayah, on Tractate Beitzah. By the famed Torah giant Rabbi Yechezkel Segal Landau, Chief Rabbi of Prague and renowned author of the Noda BiYehuda. First Edition, Prague, 1799. Beyond the title page appears a “Declaration of Apology” (Hitnatzlut) by the author. An introduction by the author's son, who brought the work to press. A “Public Notice” (Moda’ah Rabbah) by the printer. With approbations from many of the great sages of the generation, including Rabbi Mordechai Banet of Nikolsburg, Rabbi Yeshaya Pick, the author of Hafla’ah, and others. On the title page is an inscription and signature by Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Rosenfeld, attesting that the sefer belongs to his father, the renowned sage Rabbi Baruch Rosenfeld, Av Beit Din of Gollub – who was the personal attendant (hoiz bochur) of the great Rabbi Akiva Eiger. The Gaon Rabbi Baruch Rosenfeld (1815–1879) served as rabbi in Kroinka and later in Gollub (Golub-Dobrzyń). He was one of the closest and most distinguished disciples of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, having studied in his yeshiva for seven years and living in his home during that time. He was ordained by Rabbi Shlomo Eiger, son of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, who stated that he was fulfilling his father’s wish to grant ordination, which he had not managed to do during his lifetime. The Chozeh of Lublin sent him a letter in which he referred to him as “The great luminary (HaMaor HaGadol). Rabbi Yosef Yoske of Leslau wrote about him: “Exceptional in wisdom and piety... ‘Baruch’ is his name and truly blessed is he... He poured water upon the hands of the gaon, our teacher and master, the exalted R. Akiva, of blessed memory.” The newspaper HaMagid wrote of him “His renown echoed throughout all the Jewish communities... His holy words were deeply cherished... Even in the Holy Land his fame was widespread...” After his passing, it was said: “It was known to all that he was greatly beloved by the Gaon [Rabbi Akiva Eiger], like one of his own sons, due to his righteousness and integrity.” He wrote a haskamah for the sefer Moznaim LaMishpat by Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer (Krotoszyn, 1855) (See also: Chut HaMeshulash, vol. 2, leaf 74.)
