The holy author relates that he had wished for many years to print his seforim and commentaries, but while dwelling peacefully in the community of Frankfurt am Main, he found no opportunity to write. However, “through the treachery of time, ” he was forced to leave that place and settle in a city with only a few of his fellow Jews – Basel – where he sat “in the shadow of fear.” There, he hurried to fulfill his vow and publish his works. Rabbi Eliyahu Baal Shem of Loans (circa 1565–1636) studied in the yeshiva of the Maharal of Prague, engaged in Kabbalah and the writing of amulets (keme’ot). He arrived in Basel after leaving his community in Frankfurt am Main and printed this sefer, stating:“For that which is written in a book is as if it were taught to thousands and myriads.” (From the title page.)
