A Dime from the Holy Hands Lubavitcher Rebbe to a Mitzvah Tank “Tankist” – Made into a Pendant - This original American dime was personally given by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, to one of the ”Tankistim”—young Chabad activists charged with operating the legendary Mitzvah Tanks. These mobile Jewish outreach centers, often converted RVs or vans, were introduced by the Rebbe in 1974 as a revolutionary way to bring Torah, mitzvot, and Jewish identity to the streets. Mitzvah Tanks travel through cities offering Jews the opportunity to put on tefillin, light Shabbat candles, receive holiday items like menorahs, and engage in Torah study. The Tankistim serve on the front lines of Jewish outreach—bringing light and inspiration to those near and far. As a gesture of blessing and encouragement, the Rebbe would often give coins to those involved in these efforts. This specific dime was handed directly by the Rebbe to a Tankist involved in these sacred operations. To preserve and honor this moment, the recipient had the coin fashioned into a pendant: a silver loop was wrapped around the coin’s circumference, with a small sterling silver chain and an upper loop affixed so it can be worn as a necklace—close to one’s heart. This meaningful piece is a rare and moving artifact that represents the Rebbe’s personal touch, the spirit of Jewish outreach, and the holy mission carried by the Tankistim on the streets of the Jewish world.
