Two One Dollar Bills Received from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, One on the 27th of Shvat 5737, and One on the 20th of Tevet 5745 - The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, led the Chabad-Lubavitch movement from 1951. He is known for his profound wisdom, compassionate leadership, and unwavering dedication to the Jewish people. One of the many ways he sought to uplift and inspire was through the distribution of dollar bills. It was customary for the Lubavitcher Rebbe to give out dollars to his Chassidim and many other men women and children who came to see him on different occasions. The Dollars were usually distributed in relation to Holidays and Significant Days of the Year, on Sundays, and in the Rebbes later years different variations of dollars were given out and included along with the special Kuntreisim that would be distributed in 770. These dollar bills were distributed by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on two highly significant dates in the Chabad and Hebrew calendar — 27th of Shvat 5737, and the 20th of Tevet 5745 20th of Tevet, marks the Yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of the great Jewish sage and halachic authority, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon – the Rambam. The Rambam’s legacy continues to guide Jewish law, philosophy, and daily living, and Chabad places special emphasis on his teachings and daily study of his works. Receiving a dollar on this date connects the giver and recipient to a deeper appreciation of Torah scholarship and continuity. 27th of Shevat, 5737 (1977) is a pivotal moment in Chabad outreach history. On this day, the Rebbe sent a group of Shluchim (emissaries) to Tzefat (Safed), Israel, a city which at that time had only a small religious community. The Rebbe’s mission was to strengthen Jewish life, education, and observance in a region steeped in mystical tradition but lacking active Torah institutions. This event marked the beginning of a spiritual transformation. Today, Tzefat is home to a thriving religious and Chabad presence – a direct outcome of that historic mission. On the Front of each these Dollar Bills is written by R' Avraham Yaakov Ginsberg: 1. ” The 20th day of Tevet, 5745; Yahrzeit of the Rambam.” 2. ” The 27th day of Shvat, 5737 (the Rebbe) sent Shluchim to Tzefat.” Provenance: R' Avraham Yaakov Ginsberg.
