One Dollar Bill Received from the Holy Hands of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, on the 13th day of Tishrei 5748 - Yahrzeit of the Holy Tzemach Tzedek - The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, led the Chabad-Lubavitch movement from 1951. He is known for his profound wisdom, compassionate leadership, and unwavering dedication to the Jewish people. One of the many ways he sought to uplift and inspire was through the distribution of dollar bills. It was customary for the Lubavitcher Rebbe to give out dollars to his Chassidim and many other men women and children who came to see him on different occasions. The Dollars were usually distributed in relation to Holidays and Significant Days of the Year, on Sundays, and in the Rebbes later years different variations of dollars were given out and included along with the special Kuntreisim that would be distributed in 770. This one-dollar bill was received directly from the holy hands of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, on the 13th of Tishrei, 5748. This date holds special significance in Chabad as the yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, known as the Tzemach Tzedek, the third Rebbe of Chabad. The Tzemach Tzedek was renowned for his towering scholarship, his inspired leadership, and his prolific writings in Halacha and Chassidut. He passed away on this day in the year 5626 (1866). Each year on this day, the Rebbe honored the memory and teachings of the Tzemach Tzedek with great reverence. It was his custom to hold a farbrengen—a chassidic gathering filled with song, Torah, and inspiration—in tribute to the Tzemach Tzedek, celebrating his enduring impact and legacy. Receiving a dollar for tzedakah on this auspicious day is thus deeply imbued with both the merit of the Tzemach Tzedek’s legacy and the Rebbe’s powerful spiritual leadership.
