On the title page: the signature of the holy Gaon, author of Keren LeDavid, Av Beit Din of Satmar: “Hakatan Eliezer David son of my father and teacher R. Amram, may his memory be blessed Greenwald, zt”l.” At the bottom of the title page: a dedication to him: “A gift of a derashah to the sharp, outstanding, and extraordinary scholar in Torah and fear of Heaven, a pious and humble man, whose praise cannot be adequately described, upon whom praise is never complete — may he fear Heaven always — our teacher R. Eliezer David Greenwald. Hakatan Yosef Binyamin Fischer.” On the flyleaf: another signature of the Gaon, the Keren LeDavid. On page 168, a handwritten gloss in his holy script. Also recorded: “ This sefer belongs to the outstanding scholar, exalted in Torah and fear of Heaven, incisive in learning, a pious and humble man whose praise cannot be adequately described, upon whom praise is never complete — our teacher R. Eliezer David Grünwald of the holy community of Csorna.” On the flyleaf several signatures of the holy Gaon, author of Aruget HaBosem: “Hakatan Moshe son of my father and teacher R. Amram Greenwald zt”l.” The Holy Rabbi Moshe Greenwald, author of Arugat HaBosem [1813–1910], Rabbi of Khust: One of Hungary’s great rabbis and halachic authorities. Known as the author of Arugat HaBosem, the title of his famous work. He was a primary disciple of the K’tav Sofer and later studied with leading disciples of the Chatam Sofer, including Rabbi Menachem Katz-Prostitz of Zalehlim and his grandfather, Rabbi Yosef Greenwald. He served as Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva in several places. From 1893, he served as the Rabbi of Khust, where he founded a large, prominent yeshiva that attracted students from across Hungary, other countries, and even the United States. Many rabbis and Torah scholars from Hungary were his students. Although he came from a family aligned with the Chatam Sofer’s approach, he adopted Chassidic practices and became close to the rebbes of Belz and Sighet. His sons and grandsons became Rebbes of Pupa. The Holy Gaon & Tzadik Rabbi Eliezer David Greenwald was a rabbi and head of a yeshiva in the cities of Tzehlim (today Deutschkreutz in Austria), Oberwischau (Upper Vishuvah) and Satmar in Transylvania. He is known for his Sefer 'Keren L'David'. Brother of Rabbi Moshe Greenwald, author of ”Arugat HaBosem”. He was born in 1867 in Csorna , Hungary, to Rabbi Amram Greenwald, son of Rabbi Yosef Greenwald, Av Beit Din of Tchechowitz. In his youth, he studied with his brother, the author of Arugat HaBosem. He also studied briefly with Rabbi Shmuel Ehrenfeld, author of ”Chatan Sofer”. In 1889 he married the daughter of Yaakov Rapaport of Bardeyov. After his marriage, he spent five years in Bardeyov, where he founded and chaired a yeshiva throughout his stay in the city. After wards he served as a Dayan in Dunaszerdahely, At the beginning of 1907 he was elected rabbi of the Jewish community of Tzehlim, where he also headed a large yeshiva. In 1912 he moved to serve as Rabbi of Oberwischau, and headed a yeshiva that numbered hundreds of students. In 1921 he was elected rabbi of the Satmar community, and at the same time he headed a local yeshiva that with 400 students was one of the largest in the region. His adopted daughter married the grandson of his brother, Rabbi Yosef Greenwald, who was his pupil and worked on printing his seforim. He passed away in 1928.
