Item Overview
Description:
Sefer Torah Or, homily on the Torah (Bereshit) – Parts II of Minchat Kohen, by Rabbi Shmuel Kohen-Tzedek of Safed.
Only Edition. Venice: Zuan (Giovanni) di Gara, 1600.
On the verso of the title page appears the signature of the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Baruch, dayan in the community of Arta, in Ioannina (Greece).
In his youth, he studied in Salonika in the yeshiva of Rabbi Binyamin HaLevi Ashkenazi. From the early 1540s, he served as a dayan in the rabbinical court of the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Kalai, author of Mishpetei Shmuel, in the community of Arta (in Ioannina), and was actively involved with the leading sages of his generation on pressing halachic issues.
In Mishpetei Shmuel, siman 27, he is signed after Rabbi Shmuel Kalai in a legal deposition dated 1574 and in siman 78, he is the first signatory, dated 1562. In Responsa Maharshdam (Rabbi Shmuel di Medina), Choshen Mishpat, siman 29, it is written: "I saw what was written by the complete sages, the elder Rabbi Shmuel Kalai (may he be well), and the complete sage Rabbi Shlomo Baruch (may he be well)...” And in Even HaEzer, siman 50, he writes: "As was well written by the wise sage Rabbi Shlomo Baruch (may he be well) — he is Shlomo , and his teaching is likewise Shlomo."
At the end of the sefer Chukat HaPesach by Rabbi Moshe ben Chaim ben Shemtov Pizanti (Salonika, 1569), a brief commentary on the Passover Haggadah by Rabbi Shlomo Baruch was also printed.
Other antique signatures. Among them that of Rabbi Avraham ben Rabbi Yaakov Amrani, born in 1875, a Dayan in Sana'a.
