About 30 lines all personally hand written, in long condensed lines, etched by the Rebbi in spoken Yiddish, about the very importance of restoring the Mikvah Taharah in the city, called 'bud' (bath), the city's bathing house, and he expands on the shame and disgrace latent there. The Rebbi writes with his heart and soul, full of enthusiasm and zeal and his holy emotions that characterized him. 'היתכן ?!' (How come?!) he arouses with affection and solemnity to renovate and modernize 'שיהיה ברמה הטכנית, ההגיינית והשכלול המודרני ביותר'. On the back of the page, is timetable and schedule of a school, with pictures of the charity box of KKL - Keren Kayemet LeIsrael, various Zionist leaders, views of the renewed Land of Israel. The Holy Rebbi Eliezer Zusia Portugal [1898–1982], the first Rebbe of Skulen. At only about seventeen years old, he was appointed as the successor to his father in the rabbinate of the city of Skulen. Over the years, he was crowned as the Rebbe of Skulen. After the Holocaust, he began working to rescue Jews, focusing especially on providing help for orphaned children who had survived. His home became an orphanage in which hundreds of orphans lived, and in some of their registration documents he was even listed as their biological father. The Rebbe was persecuted for his activities. On the 1st of Nisan 1959 the Rebbe and his son [separately] were imprisoned for five months. On Friday, Parashat Nachamu of that year, they were released, but they remained in prison a few more days, as they refused to desecrate the Shabbat. During that period, as part of international propaganda designed to present a false image, the Communists organized a Melaveh Malka event in the presence of figures from outside the Iron Curtain, at which rabbis were forced to speak about the supposedly positive state of Jewish life in the country. The Skulener Rebbe informed the authorities that he did not know how to give a speech, and instead he would sing at the event. The Rebbe, who was a gifted composer, composed the now-famous melody to verses from Psalms (chapter 79) ”ייוָדַע בַּגּוֹיִם לְעֵינֵינוּ נִקְמַת דַּם עֲבָדֶיךָ הַשָּׁפוּךְ.תָּבוֹא לְפָנֶיךָ אֲנַקַּת אָסִיר; כְּגֹדֶל זְרוֹעֲךָ הוֹתֵר בְּנֵי תְמוּתָה. וְהָשֵׁב לִשְׁכֵנֵינוּ שִׁבְעָתַיִם אֶל חֵיקָם חֶרְפָּתָם אֲשֶׁר חֵרְפוּךָ ה'.” ”Let it be known among the nations, in our sight, the vengeance for the spilled blood of Your servants. Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You; according to the greatness of Your arm preserve those condemned to die. And return to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.” Through this song, the Rebbe hinted to the world about the true plight of the Jews behind the Soviet Iron Curtain.
