Signature of the Teacher of Maran the Chasam Sofer – Rabbi Michel Scheuer. Sefer Ba'al HaNefesh, Berlin 1762. - Sefer Ba'al HaNefesh – on the laws of Niddah by the Ra'avad, with the rulings of the Ramban and novellae by the Ran on Tractate Niddah. First edition as a standalone work (this material was previously printed in 1606 within the sefer Avodat HaKodesh by the Rashba). Berlin, 1762. On the title page appears the handwritten signature: “Chanani Hashem b’zeh haSefer haKadosh, Michel, son of my teacher and father the Gaon Moreinu Harav Reb Tevel Scheuer, may he live and be well.” The famous Gaon Rabbi Michel Scheuer was born in Frankfurt in 1738 to his illustrious father, Rabbi Tevel Scheuer. He studied in his father's yeshiva in Mainz. From 1778, he served as Rabbi of Worms, From 1782 Rabbi of Mannheim, From around 1800, Chief Rabbi of the Palatinate (Kurpfalz). He passed away in 1809 Rabbi Moshe Sofer, the Chasam Sofer, while still a prodigy of just thirteen years old in Frankfurt, was sent in 1776—on the advice of his teacher Rabbi Nathan Adler—to study in Rabbi Michel Scheuer’s yeshiva in Mainz. He learned there for two years and returned to Frankfurt after the death of his father, filled with Torah knowledge and general wisdom.   In the eulogy he delivered for Rabbi Michel (in a sermon for the 7th of Tevet, 1810), the Chasam Sofer said: “We established a day of mourning over the death of the Gaon, the beloved of my youth, our master Michel Scheuer z”l, Av Beit Din of the holy community of Mannheim, renowned for his sharp intellect—he could uproot mountains and grind them. He was elderly and greatly wise, and he taught extensively in the yeshiva.
