Torah novellae in the holy autograph of the saintly Gaon Rabbi Yechezkel Panet, author of Mareh Yechezkel, founder of the Dezh dynasty. - Printed in his responsa Mareh Yechezkel. The holy Gaon Rabbi Yechezkel Panet, author of Mareh Yechezkel (1783–1845), one of the great early leaders of Chassidism, was born in Bielsko, Poland. In his youth he studied in Leipnik under the Gaon Rabbi Baruch Frankel-Teomim, author of Baruch Ta’am, and under Rabbi Shmuel Landau, Av Beit Din of Prague (son of the Noda BiYehuda). He later drew close to Chassidism and became a disciple of the holy Maggid of Kozhnitz, the holy Chozeh of Lublin, and in particular the foremost disciple of our holy master Rebbi Menachem Mendel of Rimanov, whose teachings he transcribed and which were later published in the work Menachem Tzion. In the Chassidic world, his responsum (in Mareh Yechezkel, Responsa §104) became renowned as one of the foundational epistles of Chassidic thought. The saintly Divrei Chaim of Sanz, was known to read it with copious tears (see Menachem Tzion, ed. Sifsei Tzaddikim, p. 199). In 1803 he was appointed Av Beit Din of Istrik (Galicia), in 1813 became Rabbi of Tercal (Hungary), and in 1823—at the recommendation of the Chasam Sofer—he was appointed Rabbi of Karlsburg and the entire region of Transylvania and Siebenbürgen. There he revived Jewish life, traveling extensively, instituting ordinances, appointing halachic authorities and ritual slaughterers, establishing mikva’ot and synagogues, and restoring the strength of religion. Among his works are Mareh Yechezkel on the Torah, sermons, and responsa. His sons include the holy Rebbi Menachem Mendel Panet of Dezh, author of Ma’aglei Tzedek, and Rabbi Chaim Betzalel, Av Beit Din of Tasnad, author of Derech Yivchar.
