Set of Twelve Mother of Pearl Inlaid Synagogue Wall Plaques – Aleppo, Syria, 1924 - A remarkable and rare set of twelve synagogue signs, carved from fine walnut wood and crafted into elongated plaques. Each plaque is beautifully inlaid with thick mother-of-pearl strips forming Hebrew verses from the Bible and traditional prayers. These plaques originally adorned a synagogue in Aleppo, Syria, around the beginning of the 20th century. The signs were mounted throughout the synagogue, positioned in places where congregants would regularly see them, serving both as spiritual reminders to inspire proper intent during prayer and as striking decorative adornments to the sacred space. The craftsmanship combines Middle Eastern woodworking traditions with delicate pearl inlay, creating a luminous contrast between the dark walnut and the shimmering mother-of-pearl.
