A Glorious Pair of Silver Shabbat Sconces by Bezalel, Israel, Early 20th Century - An extraordinary pair of Bezalel silver Shabbat candle sconces, showcasing the school’s mastery of craftsmanship and Judaic artistry. Each sconce features a pair of magnificent chased lions facing away from one another, mouths agape and jaws bared in a fierce and powerful expression. Between the lions is a pierced six-branch menorah, with its stem appearing to rest naturally between the two creatures. The lions stand on a flat, rounded bar mounted atop broadened wings that rest on a stiff vertical bar. From the chased wings, an applied bead-encircled holder emerges, supporting the serrated-edged bobeches and cylindrical candle holders for each sconce. Inscribed in Hebrew on the center bar beneath the lions are the words “Shabbat Kodesh”, emphasizing the sacred purpose of the piece. Each sconce is signed Bezalel on the hanging ring at the top of the back, confirming its origin. These sconces exemplify Bezalel’s artistic elegance and the fine detailing characteristic of early 20th-century Israeli silverwork, making them a rare and stunning collectible for Judaica enthusiasts.
