Bidspirit auction | A Rare Kabbalistic snuff box,

A Rare Kabbalistic snuff box, Eastern Europe, 19th Century. - An exceptional kabbalistic snuff box crafted in the form of a miniature chest or travel trunk, made of brass and dating from the 19th century. The box is lined on all outer surfaces with vellum parchment, inscribed with kabbalistic writings that, though now faded, hint at its mystical character and purpose. The snuff box is designed with great attention to detail: a hinged lid, side handles reminiscent of travel chests of the era, and intricate linear and foliate borders adorning the brass framework. The form evokes a portable trunk, symbolizing the journey and the safeguarding of spiritual treasures within. Snuff boxes with kabbalistic inscriptions are exceedingly rare, and this piece uniquely combines practical use with mystical significance. The inscriptions and the chest-shaped design suggest it may have served not only as a snuff container but also as a protective amulet for its owner. Provenance. From the collection of Albert and Nancy Friedberg. Sold at Baranovich Auction June 20 2012  lot 125
