The author, Rabbi Elisha Gallico, was a disciple of Maran the Beit Yosef (Rabbi Yosef Karo). He is referred to by the author of Kenesset HaGedolah as “the ordained rabbi.” Born in Italy around 1520, he immigrated to Safed and became a close student of the Beit Yosef. Together with the Alshich, he co-signed a letter with their teacher, Rabbi Yosef Karo, opposing the sefer Me’or Einayim by R. Azariah de’ Rossi. Rabbi Elisha Gallico passed away in the plague in Safed in 1579–1580.
