Item Overview
Description:
A set of festival prayer books (Machzorim) printed in Slavuta at the press of Rabbi Shmuel Avraham Shapira, son of Rabbi Moshe Shapira. Slavuta, 1835.
The first volume is the Machzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and the second volume is the Machzor for the Three Festivals.
Needless to say, one can hardly overstate the greatness and renown of the Machzorim printed in Slavuta, especially with the approach of the High Holy Days, since it is well known that tzaddikim and men of piety from previous generations were careful to pray exclusively from a Machzor printed in Slavuta by the Shapira family.
Printed with the approbations of Rabbi Chaim HaKohen Rapoport, Av Beit Din of Ostroh, and Rabbi Ephraim, dayan of Sedlikov. Rabbi Chaim attests that: “It is well known and publicized in the world that the sacred seforim which come forth from his printing press are of the utmost beauty and elegance, free from all mistakes and errors, for they supervise personally and with honor that nothing improper should emerge from their hands…”
Similarly, Rabbi Ephraim writes: “The reputation of the rabbi’s son’s printing has already spread—that his seforim are adorned in every possible way, especially in proofreading, as far as human effort can reach…”
The prayers for Geshem (Rain, recited on Sukkot) and Tal (Dew, recited on Pesach) feature fine woodcut illustrations of the twelve zodiac signs.
