The author, the holy Rabbi Moshe David Ashkenazi, Rabbi of Tolcsva–Safed (1774–1856; Ishim beTshuvot Chatam Sofer, p. 90), author of Toldot Adam and Be’er Sheva, father-in-law of the holy Rebbi, the “Yetev Lev” of Sighet, and father of Rabbi Yoel Ashkenazi, Rabbi of Zlotshov. (The rebbes of Satmar and many other dynasties trace their lineage to this holy family.) Even at a young age he was appointed Rabbi of the city of Tolcsva, a position in which he served for about forty years. He immigrated to Safed in 1844 and became one of the founders of the renewed Chassidic community in Safed after the earthquake.
