Extremely Rare! Derech Tov. Dubno, 1799. - Sefer Derech Tov, drawn from Chovot ha-Levavot, composed by Rabbi Bahya [Ibn Paquda]. A wise scholar, a descendant of Rabbi the Ḥakham Tzvi, of blessed memory—Rabbi David Shlomo son of Rabbi Birach—arose and gathered and selected pleasant sayings from the Gate of the Unity of Action, the Gate of Humility, and the Gate of Repentance, choosing what is best and most refined, in a light and accessible style, to ease the reader so that it may be suitable for every person. He appended letters of the Ari, of blessed memory, and passages from works of ethical instruction (Sefer Yere’im), on the proper path of conduct. He also compiled laws from the laws of Shabbat, to instruct in the deeds that are to be performed. Dubno, 1799. With the approbations of the rabbis of Dubno: Rabbi Ze’ev Wolf (son of Rabbi Naftali Hirsch Ashkenazi), Av Beit Din; Rabbi Mordechai, son of Rabbi Moshe; Rabbi Moshe Ze’ev, son of Rabbi Dov Ber; and Rabbi David, Av Beit Din of Shoravitz. The author’s name is not stated explicitly in the sefer; however, on the final page the author cites a novella in the name of his father-in-law, “Our teacher Rabbi Mordechai Ze’ev (son of Rabbi Moshe), of blessed memory, who was Av Beit Din of the holy community of Lemberg (Lvov)”, and signs: “David, the humble one, offspring of Birach.” At the end: selections from Mesillat Yesharim (by the Ramchal). Extremely Rare! For many years it was unknown bibliographically, until a single copy appeared at the Jerusalem Judaica auction, Tevet 5766 (January 2006), lot no. 58.
