On leaf 42 is a eulogy for the Gaon of Vilna – the Gra. The author was a frequent visitor to the Gra’s home and a close associate of the Gra’s son, Rabbi Avraham. First Edition. Lemberg, 1803. The Maggid of Slonim, the gaon Rabbi Yehuda Leib HaLevi Edel (ADEL – acronym for Ad L’Ma’or, tracing his family lineage to the gaon Rabbi Zerahiah HaLevi “Ba’al HaMa’or”) [1717–1828], studied Torah under the sages of his hometown Zamosc, including the gaon Rabbi Shlomo of Chełm, author of Merkavat HaMishnah, who served as the city’s rabbi. He studied for several years in Brody and began to engage in sermonizing. He was a regular visitor to the home of the Gra and a close associate of Rabbi Avraham, the Gra’s son. He was a scholar (talmid chacham) renowned for his knowledge of aggadic literature and Midrashim. In 1798 he was appointed Maggid MiShorashim in Slonim. He authored several seforim.
