The Gaon Rabbi Chaim Benveniste (1603–1673) was born in Constantinople and studied Torah under Rabbi Yosef of Trani and other rabbis. He served as Rabbi in Tire, near Izmir, and later in Izmir itself. His books were received with immense acclaim, and it is cited in the name of the Chida (Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai) that it is recommended to consult Knesset HaGedolah prior to issuing a Halachic ruling.
