The identity of the author of Sefer Karnayim is disputed. R. Chaim Yosef David Azulai (the CḤIDA), in his Shem ha-Gedolim (Ma‘arechet Sefarim, letter Kuf–Tet–Zayin), records various conjectures regarding the author’s identity. The CḤIDA further testifies that this kabbalistic work is “very sealed and obscure, ” and that the commentary of Rabbi Samson of Ostropoli, Dan Yadin, reveals the sefer's secrets and allusions “with depth of halakhic understanding and perfection of intention.” [1], 38 leaves. 20.3 cm. Signatures: Rabbi “David Yerucḥam, may he be preserved.” Ownership inscription and signature of the Gaon Rabbi Rafi (Rafael) Maman, who purchased the sefer in 1852. Signature of Rabbi Yitzḥak ha-Kohen … The Gaon Rabbi David Yerucḥam was among the leaders of the Kollel K.K. Perushim of the disciples of the Vilna Gaon in Safed. He is signed on an emissarial letter dated 1828, together with Rabbi Israel of Shklov and Rabbi Chaim Cohen, the rabbi of Pinsk. The Gaon Rabbi Rafael Maman (1810–1880) immigrated to the Land of Israel in his youth and settled in Tiberias. He served as rabbi in Tiberias and Safed, and from 1875 onward as Av Beit Din of Tiberias. He authored responsa and sermons in manuscript; some of his responsa were printed in his sefer Marpeh la-Nefesh. At the end is bound an additional 38 leaves from Sefer ‘Arkei ha-Kinnuyim, apparently from the Korets press, with an early margina nonation.
