The renowned gaon Rabbi Meir Eisenstadt—the Mahar”m Ash (1650-1744) one of the leading sages of his generation, became known by the title of the present work as the “Author of Panim Me’irot.” He was a relative of the Shach and in his youth studied under the author of the Magen Avraham. He served as rabbi in several important communities, and in 1707 was appointed rabbi of the community of Eisenstadt and the “Seven Communities.” There he established a great yeshiva whose students came from near and far.
