Rabbi David Zakkut was born around 1750 to his father Rabbi Mazal Tov of Modena, a descendant of Rabbi Moses Zakkut. He was one of the most renowned rabbis of Italy in his generation-a distinguished Torah scholar, proficient in both Halacha and Kabbalah, a teacher of Torah, a remarkable preacher, and a man of broad intellectual vision. It seems one could say he continued the path of the Italian rabbis of previous generations, following in the footsteps of his teacher, Rabbi Ishmael HaCohen, Chief Rabbi of the Modena community and author of the responsa collection Zera Emeth. He served as the Rabbi of Modena from 1849. He was an expert mohel, which is why he wrote the present sefer. He passed away on the 29th of Iyar 1865 and was buried in Modena.
