The author was among the sages of Salonika in the 17th century. He studied at the yeshiva of Rabbi Chaim Shabbetai in Salonika and later served as head of the yeshiva after him. He was a halachic decisor, preacher, rabbi, and head of the “Chevrat Talmud Torah” yeshiva in Salonika, as well as rabbi of the kollelim there. He later moved to Izmir, where he disseminated Torah learning. Among his students were Rabbi David Conforti, author of Koreh Ha-Dorot; Rabbi Shlomo ben Shmuel Florentin, author of Doreish Mishpat; and Rabbi Yitzchak Florentin. His granddaughter Mira was married to Shabbetai Tzvi.
