Chesed La’Alafim. Halachic Teachings by the Pele Yoetz First Edition. Salonika, 1836. Very Rare. - Sefer Chesed La’Alafim, containing halachic chiddushim on Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, by the saintly gaon Rabbi Eliezer Papo, renowned throughout the Jewish world for his holy sefer Pele Yoetz. First Edition. Salonika, 1836. This sefer serves as a concise halachic compendium arranged according to the order of the Shulchan Aruch, summarizing the opinions of the Achronim. In his characteristic style, the Pele Yoetz interweaves within his rulings words of mussar and practices of holiness. Printed by the author’s son, Rabbi Yehuda Papo, who added an extensive and fascinating introduction about his father, along with glosses that are themselves quoted by later poskim. The sefer is frequently cited by leading Sephardic sages such as the Sdei Chemed, the Ben Ish Chai, and Rabbi Eliyahu Mani of Chevron, and especially by Rabbi Chaim Palagi of Izmir, who refers to the author as “the chassid Rabbi Eliezer the Great.” Rabbi Palagi urged regular study of this sefer: “Let one review from time to time the sefer Chesed La’Alafim from siman 202 onward, and he is assured that he will never stumble” (Mo’ed Lekol Chai, siman 30, sec. 28). Very Rare! Has only appeared a handful of times at public auction.  [4], 146, 149–156, 155–207 leaves.  20.5 cm. The author, Rabbi Eliezer Papo, was known as a sacred person, and his grave site in Bulgaria was a pre-Holocaust pilgrimage site, where the masses would flock on his yahrtzeit and in general - and experience salvation. The reason for this is that before his passing, he promised that anyone who would visit his grave after ritual immersion and recital of Tehillim, along with prayer with proper intent, would experience salvation and mercy regarding all his needs.  The date appearing on the title page is 1841; however, bibliographers determined, based on the names of the printers mentioned on the title page, that the correct year of printing is 1836.
