Copy of the Holy Rebbi Chaim Shneur Zalman of Lyadi (Son of the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch). Yismach Lev (Chernobyl) – Lviv, 1848. - Sefer Yismach Lev, by the Holy Maggid of Chernobyl). Lemberg, 1848. On the title page are two stamps of the holy Rebbi “Chaim Shneur Zalman” of Lyadi. The author Aza”r (Alexander Ziskind Rabinowitz, from Lyadi), who frequented the home of Rebbi Chaim Shneur Zalman, writes regarding the bibliothèque of Rebbi Chaim Shneur Zalman, and of the Seforim which belonged to the Tzemach Tzedek and which Rebbi Chaim Shneur Zalman inherited, as follows: “… I have seen him many times delving into the Talmud, and on his desk were always the Seforim of the Gemarah and many of responsa, among Kabbalistic Seforim. His bibliothèque was extensive, for he had inherited much from his forefathers, and he still added to them from his own purchases”. The holy Rebbe Chaim Shneur Zalman of Lyadi (1814-1880), son of the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch. In the Sefer “Beis Rebbi” he is described thus: “His worship was most wonderous, with great noise and amazement, until he captured the hearts of those who heard, and even a heart of stone became softened… during Shmoneh Esreh… his face was inflamed… his wisdom was extremely wonderous, and the goodness of his nature was also wonderous, for he was literally a man of Chessed… in 1869 he made Lyadi his residence… and to there a large portion of our people travelled to drink with thirst his holy words and to seek advice from him… He would receive each and every one with a happy countenance, and all that came from his holy mouth was as though one would seek the words of G-D”. Rabbi Yaakov Lipshutz of Kovno (Rabbi Yitzchak Elchonon Spector of Kovno’s right-hand-man), in his momoirs, bears witness to the complete turnaround that Rebbi Chaim Shneur Zalman effected in the soul of a “Captured Child” with only a few words. He tells of a Jewish soldier, who was kidnapped as a child together with other Cantonists, and was baptized as a christianagainst his will when he was only seven years old, in 1853. This soldier told that it was only in 1876 that he was given, for the first time, a furlough and allowed to go visit his parents. During that furlough, he went to receive a blessing from Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman of Lyadi. The Rebbe blessed him with a short sentence in a few words, and these words created turmoil within his soul. After he was released from his duties to the Russian army, he returned to his Jewish religion, to the deep disappointment of his supervisors – all due to that impression of holiness that remained in him from that visit. This soldier told Rabbi Yaakov Lipshutz in 1916 (forty years after that short visit): “When he approached the Rebbe’s chair, he felt in his soul a sort of awe… a lofty awe. He felt that he is standing before a man of wisdom and spirit, and in his blessing he felt a sort of good hope for salvations and succor”. Rabbi Lipshutz notes that “This had happened in 1876… and the storyteller still remembers vividly all the details and impressions, as though he had just now observed them… till today he mentions his meeting with the Rabbi of Lyadi with holy emotions.” (Zichron Yaakov, vol.I, pp. 206-207). 20 Leaves. 22.8 cm.
