Sharp marginal gloss by the Holy Mincḥat Elazar of Munkács, on Divrei Torah of Maran the Sar Shalom of Belz. - Sefer Daʿat Zekenim, containing informal discourses of a Torah scholar, together with the appended booklet Kiryat Arba, comprising four essays by Rabbi Abraham Segal Ettinger. Only Edition. Printed at the rare Sanok press, 1911. On the final leaf appear the stamps of the holy Tzaddik Rabbi Chaim Elazar Shapira, Av Beit Din of Munkács-the Mincḥat Elazar. On folio 59 there is cited a Torah teaching in the name of the Holy tzaddik Maran the Sar Shalom of Belz, concerning Nefilat Apayim (the falling on one’s face), stating that if it derives from holiness it is performed with joy and an exalted state of consciousness (gadlut ha-mochin), etc. In response, the Mincḥat Elazar writes a forceful handwritten marginal gloss, in his own holy hand: “I do not believe that such words ever issued from the mouth of that Tzaddik, of blessed memory, for on the contrary: according to the teachings of the Ari z”l, the intention of Nefilat Apayim must be the descent of one’s soul to its very depths, etc. And what was written—that it must be with exaltation and expanded consciousness—is entirely unfounded; the opposite is true, as explained elsewhere.” Stamp of the author, the gaon Rabbi Abraham Segal Ettinger.
