Beis Yosef on Choshen Mishpat. First Edition. Sabbioneta, 1559. - Classic: Premier Sefer & Basis of All Laws of Choshen Mishpat. Tur-Choshen Mishpat by Rabbi Yaakov Baal Haturim, son of the Rosh, with Beis Yosef by Rabbi Yosef Karo. First edition; printed by the author. In his celebrated, fundamental work Beis Yosef, Rabbi Yosef Karo (1488-1575) laid the foundations of Jewish law for all future generations. Here, he compiles all original halachic sources, rulings, disputes and reasoning of all the Rishonim and, based on his conclusions, established the law in the Shulchan Aruch. “…It has spread among all of Israel, and found beauty, favor and prestige in the eyes of all who peruse it. Sages and Rabbanim exalt him and commend it above all works that preceded it…” (Preface to Knesses Hagedolah, Ohr Hachaim) Rabbi Yosef Karo dedicated twenty years of his life to authoring this masterwork, and an additional twelve years to editing and preparing it for print. He entitled his sefer ‘Beis Yosef’ upon the instructions of an angel who appeared to him (Maggid Meisharim, Parshas V’zos Habrachah). Sabbioneta, 1559. First Edition.   With handwritten marginalia throughout the copy. Printer’s device on final leaf. Ornate leather binding Provenance: Valmadonna-Lunzer collection. 332 pages. 40X29 cm.
